- The first group of students from IIT Madras visits Germany. This programme continues with students from all five Indian Institutes of Technology, along with a group of German students visiting India

- Short-term scholarships were offered for M.A. and M.Phil. courses in German
- The “Sandwich Model” was introduced within the framework of the normal long-term fellowship programme
- Dr Beatrix Brandi-Dohrn joined as the Director (1983-1987)
