The New Delhi office of the DAAD, established in 1960, promotes academic exchange between Germany and India, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Nepal, Sri Lanka. It supports academicians and scientists in fulfilling their academic and scientific pursuits by providing financial assistance. DAAD is funded by the Federal Republic of Germany and is functioning as an official agency in accordance with the Cultural agreement between Germany and India of March 1969. It also manages the German Centre for Research and Innovation – DWIH New Delhi.

The DAAD provides information about education in Germany, grants scholarships to students, invites scientists from Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Nepal and Sri Lanka to Germany as well as those from Germany to these countries, and supports bilateral research projects.
