In order to explore the possibilities of cooperation and a university partnership, Prof. Dr. med. Ralf Weigel (Friede-Springer Endowed Professorship for Global Child Health) and Dr. Marzellus Hofmann (Vice Dean for Teaching at the Faculty of Health) from the University of Witten / Herdecke (UW / H) visited the Khesar Gyalpo University of Medical Sciences of Bhutan (KGUMSB) along with DAAD officials on a fact-finding mission.

The two Universities intend to apply for a co-operation under the German Academic Exchange Service "Partnerships for the Health Sector in Developing Countries" (PAGEL) Programme. "The on-site visit served to prepare the application. I think our experience in planning and implementing teaching programs is useful to the Bhutanese. And we will acquire skills in development cooperation", explains Professor Weigel.

About DAAD Programme PAGEL

The aim of the programme, which is funded by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development, is to help to strengthen the health sector in each partner country. The long-term objective is to contribute to the sustainable development and creation of high-quality, cosmopolitan universities in partner countries. To achieve this, teaching at the partner universities is to be strengthened in their structures and existing collaborations between the participating universities are to be consolidated. The programme also aims to help German universities to make active partnership contributions to development cooperation and to raise the level of internationalisation at the universities.
