In a ceremony held on 11 June 2018 in Pune, Dr. Arvind A. Natu, Professor of Chemistry at IISER Pune and Research Ambassador of the DAAD, was awarded with the prestigious “Bundesverdienstkreuz”, Germany’s Cross of the Order of Merit by the Consul General of Germany in Mumbai, Dr. Jürgen Morhard. The President of the Federal Republic of Germany bestowed this highly recognised medal for Dr. Natu’s outstanding work for strengthening Indo-German collaboration, especially in the field of science, education and technology.
The Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany was instituted in 1951. It is the highest tribute paid by Federal Republic of Germany to individuals, both Germans or foreigners, for outstanding services to the nation. The very purpose of this award is to honor achievements in the political, economic, social or intellectual realm.
Dr. Natu, who received his PhD from Pune University and did Post-Doctoral research at TU Berlin and Bielefeld University in Germany, is now a researcher and also professor at IISER Pune. Before joining IISER, he worked as senior scientist at NCL Pune from 1973 till 2007. As an adviser, Dr. Natu was instrumental in facilitating the research path to Germany for many young students and researchers. He has also worked as an Honorary Advisor for DAAD (German Academic Exchange Service) from 2007 and since 2010 as DAAD’s Research Ambassador. Besides his research activities in science and education, Dr. Natu has actively led the Indian team as a mentor at several International Chemistry Olympiads. He has worked as a visiting scientist at universities in Germany as well as in many other European countries and as a visiting professor at Bielefeld University. Furthermore, Dr. Natu closely collaborates with DAAD in various events, such as the Falling Wall program, industry academia interactions, WISE and other fellowship programs, research workshops, meetings for Master and PhD-students, science lectures and various other activities.
